Mitchell Hall forms part of Marischal College, Archibald Simpson's Category A listed Tudor-Gothic granite complex in the centre of Aberdeen. For the University of Aberdeen, in partnership with Acanthus Architects, we took part in the refurbishment of the hall and ran on-site training courses in stone indenting, ashlar pointing and lime pointing to the granite tracery windows, teaching the techniques to a local masonry contractor working on the project.

The challenge

The aim was to raise awareness of building conservation and improve skills across the industry, using real repairs to the hall's granite tracery as the classroom.

Our solution

We acted as site supervisor and training body, demonstrating and supervising indenting, ashlar pointing and lime pointing to the tracery windows, training the local masonry contractor's operatives in lime pointing and promoting best conservation practice.

Outcomes

Real repairs, real learning

Granite tracery repaired as part of hands-on training.

Best practice promoted

Conservation skills shared with the wider industry.

Part of a wider story

LTM later cleaned and restored the Marischal College façades for Sir Robert McAlpine, work commended at the GIA Design Awards 2011 and given an Aberdeen Civic Society Award for Craftsmanship (see the Marischal College case study).
