Georgian Edinburgh:
Georgian Steps George Square
Edinburgh
George Square was laid out in 1766, a year before Edinburgh's New Town, as the first development outside the crowded Old Town. Its surviving terraced houses are Category A listed. For the University of Edinburgh we replaced the Georgian entrance steps to one of the townhouses.
Before & after
Drag across the image to compare the building before our work and after completion.

BeforeAfter
The challenge
The steps, platts and arch stones had to be renewed to match the originals exactly in profile, colour and texture.
Our solution
Our masons replaced the steps, platt and arch stones in Clashach sandstone with rubble masonry infill, indenting other sections as needed. Traditional lime mortars were used throughout, thinned with 1% casein to grout the dowel holes.
Outcomes
A perfect match
New stone matched to the original profile, colour and texture.
Traditional fixing
Dowelled and lime-grouted using casein-modified mortar.
Safe, lasting entrance
A Category A listed townhouse entrance restored for daily use.
