Careers & apprenticeships

Train as we were trained.

Our people are our greatest asset. Since 1999 we have trained 26 stonemason apprentices — reviving the journeyman tradition for the 21st century.

Apprenticeships

Learn a trade that lasts centuries

Our annual apprentice scheme combines Historic Scotland’s exemplary training centre at Elgin Cathedral with our own SQA-approved, in-house training programme. Apprentices work alongside experienced masons, conservators, plasterers and joiners on some of Scotland’s most important historic buildings.

Fellowships

Develop as a craftsperson

Five of our key site managers have completed the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Fellowship. Our philosophy is simple: train as we are trained, and educate as we are educated.

Students & placements

Sharing heritage skills

We regularly host students on Historic Scotland’s Building Conservation Fellowship, the Quinque programme (USA), SPAB scholar and fellowship schemes, and craft-skills placements from across Europe.
