Ceiling assessment and fabric survey:
Kildrummy Church
Kildrummy, Aberdeenshire
LTM Consultancy was appointed by the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust, on behalf of Kildrummy Church Congregation, to assess the condition of the plaster ceiling and the external building fabric of Kildrummy Church.

The challenge
The traditional lath and lime plaster ceiling was showing extensive cracking. The congregation needed to know how serious the defects were, what could be saved, and what repair would involve, so that they could seek funding with a clear specification behind them.
Our solution
We assessed the ceiling from below and from above, then mapped each plaster defect and overlaid the findings so they could be interpreted properly and used to direct the repairs. A repair specification followed, using a range of plaster consolidation and reinforcement techniques so that the historic plasterwork could be retained rather than replaced. Once the survey work was complete, temporary repairs made the ceiling safe while the congregation sought funding. A detailed survey of the external fabric picked up localised repairs classed as urgent, which were carried out to stop water getting into the building. It also gave us the chance to deal with other maintenance items, including clearing the gutters and a few localised slate repairs.
Outcomes
Historic plaster kept
The specification was built around consolidation and reinforcement, so the original ceiling stays rather than being stripped and replaced.
A clear record of the defects
Mapped and overlaid findings gave the congregation an evidence base to take into funding discussions.
Water kept out
Urgent external repairs and gutter clearance were done during the survey, protecting the building while longer term work was planned.
