Cromarty East Church

Cromarty East Church is a Category A listed church described as the epitome of a post-Reformation church, now cared for by the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust. Evidence found during our work showed parts of the building date back to the 14th century. As main contractor from October 2008, we carried out comprehensive repairs to the fabric, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and The Highland Council.

The challenge

The impervious cement harl was causing damp and decay, and the internal plasterwork needed substantial repair. Highland Archaeology Services inspected and monitored the works, and when human remains were found beneath the flagstones we worked closely with the archaeologists throughout to protect them.

Our solution

Following the Conservation Plan, we removed the cement harl and reinstated traditional lime harling, repaired and consolidated the internal plaster, and carried out masonry, joinery, slating, painting and drainage works. New drainage around the church tackled the internal damp and is helping the building dry out.

Outcomes

A drier, healthier church

Lime harling and new drainage allow the walls to breathe and dry out.

History uncovered

The works revealed that parts of the church date back to the 14th century.

Archaeology respected

Remains found under the floor were protected through close working with archaeologists.
