The challenge
Earlier cementitious repairs were damaging the stone, voids had opened in the masonry and the volute mouldings of the capitals had decayed.
Our solution
We removed the cement repairs and replaced them with lime, grouted voids to consolidate the masonry and replaced around half of the volute mouldings with newly carved stone. The remaining volutes were repaired with lime mortar reinforced with non-ferrous armatures.
Outcomes
Capitals restored
Ionic volutes carved and repaired to their original form.
Original stone retained
Half the volutes repaired rather than replaced.
Harmful repairs reversed
Cement replaced with compatible lime.
