A West End granite villa:
Granite Villa West End of Aberdeen
Aberdeen
This late 19th-century semi-detached granite villa in Aberdeen's West End is built of mass granite bedded in hot lime mortar. We repointed it in lime over two phases for the owner.

BeforeAfter
The challenge
Cement pointing had been applied over the original lime mortars, and the exposed chimney and skews needed to stay weathertight.
Our solution
We carefully removed the cement from the front elevation and repointed in traditional lime, then lightly cleaned the façade with a weak biocide. The owner then asked us back for a second phase on the gable and chimney, where we used a more robust hydraulic lime on the cope and skew stones and rebedded the chimney cans with new hydraulic lime haunching.
Outcomes
Lime returned
Cement replaced with lime to suit the original construction.
Repeat client
The owner commissioned a second phase after the first.
Exposed details protected
Hydraulic lime used where weather exposure is greatest.
