A Cairngorms shooting lodge:
Inchrory Lodge
Tomintoul, Cairngorms
Inchrory Lodge is an extended 19th-century shooting lodge on the edge of the Cairngorms, within a Site of Special Scientific Interest. We carried out remedial repairs to its rubble masonry, including full repointing of the main lodge.

The challenge
The lodge was originally harled and limewashed, but these coatings had been stripped, leaving the rubble walls exposed. The owners wanted the walls pointed rather than re-harled, so the pointing itself had to keep the weather out. Large voids were also found deep behind the earlier pointing.
Our solution
We finished the pointing flush with the rubble rather than recessed, to shed water. LTM Consultancy assessed the performance needed and analysed the original mortars, specifying a hot lime mix gauged with natural hydraulic lime. Deep voids were packed and filled to stop water penetrating the walls.
Outcomes
Weatherproof without harl
Flush pointing in a designed hot lime mortar protects exposed rubble walls.
Hidden defects fixed
Deep voids found behind old pointing were packed and filled.
Evidence-led specification
Mortar analysis guided the repair mix.
