On General Wade’s road:
Garvamore Barracks
Corrieyairack Pass, Inverness-shire
Garvamore Barracks is a Category A listed tacksman's house built around 1740 on General Wade's military road over the Corrieyairack Pass, and served as a King's House inn for troops and travellers between Fort Augustus and Ruthven Barracks. For West Highland Estates we repaired the masonry and reinstated traditional lime harling.

BeforeAfter

The challenge
The masonry of the walls, windows and door openings had deteriorated and contained deep voids.
Our solution
We repaired the walls and openings, deep packed and pinned the voids, and reinstated traditional lime harling finished with coloured limewash.
Outcomes
Masonry secured
Deep voids packed and pinned to give a sound substrate.
Historic finish restored
Lime harling and coloured limewash, as the building would originally have had.
Heritage preserved
A rare survivor of the 18th-century military road network conserved.
