Training the next generation:
Ellon Pavilion
Gordon Park, Ellon, Aberdeenshire · 2009
Ellon Pavilion was designed and built by eleven building craft apprentices and six graduate fellows as part of The King’s Foundation Residential Summer School, in association with Scotia Homes. The public voted for the winning design, which the apprentices built at Gordon Park in September and October 2009 with LTM's guidance.

The challenge
A team of apprentices needed to design and build a permanent community pavilion that was appropriate for its setting, using traditional materials and methods, within a short programme.
Our solution
Andy Bradley of LTM delivered lectures on traditional building methods and materials to help the team decide what was feasible and appropriate, then mentored the apprentices through construction. LTM Materials donated lime materials and organised tools and equipment for the build.
Outcomes
Skills passed on
Apprentices learned traditional design and construction by building a real community structure.
A new public building
A pavilion for Gordon Park, designed with public input.
Recognised
Commended at the Aberdeenshire Council Design Awards 2010, and LTM became an Enrolled Practice of The King’s Foundation.
