War memorial masonry works:
Devonvale War Memorial
Tillicoultry · 2017
The Devonvale War Memorial stands on Moss Road in Tillicoultry, beneath the Ochil Hills. A seated, grieving figure rises from a stone plinth within a curved sandstone wall, with ornate iron gates and carved gate piers at its entrance. Clackmannanshire Council appointed us to carry out masonry works to the memorial in March 2017.

The challenge
A war memorial in a prominent public position has to be treated with care. Its stonework is carved and finely jointed, it carries the names of the fallen, and it sits beside a busy road and a retail park, so the works had to be planned to protect the figure, the inscriptions and the ironwork while the stone was worked on.
Our solution
We carried out the masonry works over an agreed three week programme in March 2017, working on the memorial's stone wall, piers and plinth. The surrounding lawn, gates and ironwork were protected during the works. The work was undertaken by our own tradesmen, using traditional masons' tools and methods suited to the age and character of the stone.
Outcomes
A memorial cared for
Masonry works carried out to a local landmark of remembrance for the community.
Short, focused programme
A three week project planned around a busy public location.
Original fabric retained
The carved figure, inscriptions and gates were left in place and protected.
